Department of Social Services (DSS)
When you call the Department of Social Services 336-641-3000 you will have an interview
with a social worker, this is known as an “intake”. During the intake you may
be asked question concerning you including:
q
ability to
care for yourself
q
those who are
helping you, such as family and friends
q
income and
financial assets, and
q
your physical
and mental health
These questions will be asked to determine your needs and the services
appropriate to your needs. The information will also help them determine if you
are eligible for services through Medicaid or another program. If the DSS
determines that you are eligible for Medicaid or a grant program, they can help
you receive services from a number of public and private agencies that can
offer you the assistance you need.
If you receive Case Assistance, Senior Resources will conduct an
extended interview and assessment with you which will help Senior Resources
determine how best to help you.
Case Assistance can be provided to individuals who:
q
are 60 years
and over and have no needs that would require medical assistance
q
have
difficulty with 3 or fewer “Activities of Daily Living” (ADLs) such as bathing,
dressing, toilet use, eating, transferring from bed or chair, walking, and
grooming; and
q
can actively
participate in the service management

to help. Senior Resources can:
q
coordinate
contact for you with community agencies that can give you the help you need,
q
offer
short-term problem solving for everyday concerns,
q provide internal referrals to other Senior
Resources programs such as Foster Grandparents,
q
help you
arrange transportation, and
q
check back
with you to make sure you are receiving the help you need.
If problems are complex or require intensive care, Senior Resources
will help you contact other agencies, such as DSS. For more information, refer
