Reverse Mortgages

A reverse mortgage is a special type of loan that enables older homeowners to access a portion of the equity in their homes without having to sell, move out, or even undertake a monthly repayment obligation.

To qualify, homeowners must be at least 62, occupy the home as their primary residence, and either own the home outright or have a low mortgage balance. No repayment is required as long as the borrower owns and occupies the home and because there is no monthly payment, applicants do not have to qualify based on assets, income, or credit rating.

q       You can receive free information about the Housing and Urban Development Reverse Mortgage process by calling 1-800-209-8085.

q       You may also want to look at the NC Division of Aging and Adult Services Housing web site at http://www.dhhs.state.nc.us/aging/housing2.htm.
